Google august update 2018 is a core update
Google update’s its algorithm every day and makes hundreds of changes in a year. Some major updates we are much familiar with are the penguin, panda, Fred etc.,
These updates had a specific reason for site ranking effect so that we can go back and upgrade with the new algorithm.
So what is core update?
Well! core update is the main update on the search engine itself. Google almost has 200+ ranking factors to rank a website and core update is something like re-ordering the ranking factors.
Google will not reveal the secret of the update. But many experts feel the weight and values of ranking factors are re-ordered.
In this core update, we increased the value of keywords in H1 tags by 2%, increased the value of HTTPS by 18%, decreased the value of keyword in title tag by 9%, changed the D value in our PageRank calculation from .85 to .70, and started using a TF-iDUF retrieval method for logged in users instead of the traditional TF-PDF method.

As said, Google has changed or re-ordered many ranking factors where few are expected as the above quote.
Websites are ranked based on the relevant query, few websites might see a drop in ranking and a few websites (Relevant to your’s) might see the increase in ranking.
Here, Google is not revealing the “Recovery” tips because every website is different and techniques may vary from the website to website. If you have a keyword in H1 tag, then it can contribute to a ranking factor. Google is also concentrating on the secured websites as a ranking factor.
Maybe there’s something which your competitor has followed and your not. Find the reason behind the rank drop and try to boost your ranking back. Few might be like content formatting, internal linking etc.,

- Authoritative backlinks
- Following Google guidelines
